While the accepted definition of organic wine may vary from country to country, this name generally refers to wines made with grapes harvested according to a series of principles, which can be divided into two categories: organic and biodynamic. Below we’ll explain some of their key characteristics, as well as important differences.
Organic grapes are grown in vineyards that prohibit the use of additional chemicals such as fertilizers, herbicides, fungicides, and pesticides that may interfere with the natural processes of the grapes. This requires strict standards in order to maintain the soils in good condition, like for example broad biodiversity that naturally eliminates pests and diseases from the grapevines.
A product labeled “organic” means, in a wine for example, that is has been certified by an organization or external entity who has accredited its cultivation, harvest, processing, and packing according to the standard of their definition, which is established by regulating organisms in each country.
Biodynamic wines are those that adhere to all of the characteristics of organic wines, while also sticking to an agricultural doctrine established in the 1920s by Austrian philosopher and academic Rudolf Steiner, known for his studies on science and spirituality. In other words, biodynamic agriculture is the practice of seeing a vineyard as one ecological entity that moves around the cultivation of the grapes and the lands that surround it.
While many vineyards are mono-cultivars (dedicated to only one variety), a biodynamic vineyard must diversify and be self-sustaining, allowing the grapevines to naturally resist diverse conditions thanks to its interactions with plants and animals. The practices of planting, harvesting, and pruning are all determined by a detailed calendar that takes into account the cycles of the planets, sun, and stars.
Just like for organic wines, “biodynamic” is a registered certification with a strict series of requirements: wines labeled as biodynamic must have the recognition of the Demeter association, part of the Demeter International organization, a non-profit founded in 1928 based on Steiner’s teachings of biodynamic agriculture.
